Laboratory of Radiation Oncology & Radiation Biology
Since Professor Sung-Hwan Ha established the Laboratroy of Radiation Oncology and Radiation Biology in 1987, our aim has been to optimise radiation therapy; maintaining maximal treatment efficacy whilst minimising damage to normal tissues. Our research encompasses both basic radiation biology and mediation research, with recent projects including studies on the role of radiation biology therapy in the treatment non-tumour diseases such as cardiac arrhythmia and arthritis. We are a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Pf. Hong-Gyun Woo, Pf. Hak-Jae Kim, Pf. Ji-Hyun Chang, Pf. Joo-ho Lee, Pf. Byung-Hyunck Kim, Dr. Sun-Hwa Lee and Mr. Sang-Rok Jeon.

Research topics

) Maximising the efficacy of radiatio therapy  To study the mechanisms behind paradoxical cell death via the EGF pathway  To develop a model of glioblastoma in order to stduy the mechnisms involved in the recurrence of diseases  To develop novel drugs to maximise the effeicacy of radiation therapy on refractory brain tumours  Comparision of the anticancer responses and oncological characteristic of a natural versas an radiation-induced sarcoma cell line 2) Overcoming complications following radiation therapy  To study pathogenesis of radiation-induced esophagitis and to develop novel therapy using EGF  To study the mechanisms behind radiation-induced enteritis, changes in the gut microbiota and treatment with probiotics  To develop novel treatments for radiation-induced neurotoxicity 3) Non-tumour diseases and fundamental dadiation biology research  To develop novel cardiac arrhythmia treatment using high-energy radiation  Genome analysis of radiation-induced inflammation and immunoreaction and its relationship with radiation-induced sarcoma  Pre-clinical study of low-dose radiation therapy for osteoarthritis

Research goals
Our Goals include both continuing to research the optimisation of radiation therapy in existing fields, such as refractroy cancer, but also expanding our research into novel fields such as 'FLASH' and the treatment of non-tumour diseases including cardiac arrhythmia and arthritis. Through this research, we aim to nurture the next-generation of researchers in the field of radiation biology.
